Our large, enthusiastic Choir meets for practice on Friday evenings. New members are welcome. The Choir is affiliated to the RSCM and we run the Voice for Life training scheme.
The St James Organ Scholarship is awarded annually. As well as receiving organ tuition, the Organ Scholar is expected to give regular performances and manage the other occasional organists who play for our various services.

Southwell Minster Evensong 11 July 2015
The Canadian Cambridge Kiwanis Boys Choir stayed with us during their tour to England again this year, and we joined forces to sing Choral Evensong at Southwell Minster. A really good sound in a really good acoustic. Ian Bevell awoke the organ!

Thank you to everyone who came and sang so beautifully for Choral Evensong at St John the Baptist, Tideswell, "The Cathedral of the Peak".
Music included: Locus Iste (Bruckner), Smith 4-part Responses, Mag & Nunc (Brewer in D), How beautiful upon the mountains (John Stainer), Psalm 53 and well-known hymns. Lots of compliments received!
Also, well done to Isaac for playing the organ for us, and for a rousing rendition of Widor's toccata at the end, pulling out all the stops!!

We welcomed Barlborough Primary School Choir (who were fantastic!), to our 9 Lessons & Carols Service, where they sang 'C is for Christmas' and 'Unto us is born a son'. They also joined our Junior Choristers in singing 'Away in a manger'. Do come again!
The Church Choir sang 'Gaudete', 'Adam Lay Ybounden', 'I saw three ships', 'The holly and the ivy' (Gardner) and 'Deo Gracias' (Britten), as well as leading the congregation in usual carols (with descants a plenty!) 'Once in Royal David's City', 'Good King Wenceslas', 'O little town of Bethlehem', 'The first Nowell', 'O come all ye faithful' and 'Hark the herald angels sing'. Thank you to both David Hopkinson and John Whybrow for accompanying us.

What an enjoyable Advent Carol Service (Christmas is certainly on its way now!). This year's music had a lot of input from Willcocks. We sang: Matin Responsory (Palestrina), Come thou Redeemer (arr. We were again invited to sing the Sung Mass and Evensong services at Chesterfield Parish Church. Maybe this will become an annual tradition! Everyone spoke very highly of our singing, and the Evensong was particularly excellent! We also climbed the crooked spire, and Joshua tried to ring a bell, but failed; Helena managed it with ease!
Feedback included: "I thought the performance on Sunday night was excellent. The choir just seems to get better and better."
RSCM Cathedral Course 13th-19th August 2012 - Salisbury - Imogen took part in this course directed by Paul Hale, and had a fantastic time.
Sunday 12th August - Solene was visiting from France and sang with us. She taught us a Taizé song, "Retourne, mon âme, à ton repos".
Sunday 5th August - Ian Bevell was visiting from Canada and dropped in and played the organ!

Pilgrimage to Tewkesbury Abbey 21/22 April 2012
24 of our Choristers went on a Pilgrimage to Tewkesbury Abbey where we sang Evensong on the Saturday and Sunday and High Mass on the Sunday; the latter two services with the Abbey Choir under the direction of Carleton Etherington. What acoustics, what an experience! Thank you to everyone at the Abbey for making us so welcome.

CHORISTER SUCCESS! Emma & Imogen have been offered places on the prestigious 2012 RSCM Cathedral Course, which this year will be held at Salisbury Cathedral from 13-19 August 2012, and will be directed by Paul Hale. The invited choir (all Silver Award holders and above) will sing daily evensong from Tuesday to Sunday as well as Sunday morning services. If you can go to listen, you should. The choir will sing a wide repertoire to a very high standard.

We were invited to sing the Sung Mass and Evensong services at Chesterfield Parish Church. They must have liked us because they have invited us back! We had a tour of the church and climbed the crooked spire.

Saturday 9th July 2011 - Evensong was sung at Southwell Minster by the Combined Choirs of St James' Barlborough, St John the Baptist, Clowne, CKBC & a few Newark Songmen. What a sound!

Sally sang the Gospel Acclamation solo beautifully.

The Choir sang 'Ave Verum' (Mozart) at the Wedding of Jody Binns & Sophie Pickering, and Alexandra (below) sang 'Ave Maria' (Gounod/Bach). Both were well-received getting generous applause.
